Blizzard survival bag
£27.50

Blizzard survival bag

Blizzard survival bag. Very effective silver foil sleeping bag for emergency / intentional use. Double layers of fabric create a warm zone of still air, giving warmth equivalent to a 1 - 2 season sleeping bag. Neither very light nor very compact (it won't fit in a helmet or down a boot!)it is massively more effective than the traditional orange survival bag, let alone lighter versions. Excellent kit. Combine one or two of these with a group shelter, a small cooking pot, and a hexi stove, to make a small tacklebag size, light, robust, and effective 'emergency grab bag' for expeditions who want to be self sufficient in the first instance - from the Berger to the back of beyond.
Blizzard survival blanket large
£22.25

Blizzard survival blanket large

Blizzard survival blanket. Full size heavy duty silver foil blanket for emergency / intentional use. Neither so light, nor so small, nor nearly so cheap as a traditional survival blanket, this blanket has one advantage; it may actually keep you warm if you end up stuck or injured. Potentially a life saver; reusable with a sticky layer to secure the edges of the blanket together (easier to wrap around casualties, or join two or more together for whatever reason...)
Blizzard survival blanket small
£17.00

Blizzard survival blanket small

Blizzard survival bag small. The same material as the larger blanket, and the bag, but less of it. Less coverage, and lack of the sticky edging to create a snug fit around the body, make this a less comfortable proposition than the other two products in this line. It is, however, lighter and significantly cheaper; and still much warmer than a single layer of plastic sheeting. Incidentally, a good way to stop your belayer getting hypothermic in the course of a protracted bolt climb...
Hexamine stove
£3.50

Hexamine stove

Hexamine stove. Basically, the military solid fuel cooker as used with ration packs for donkeys' years. Utterly robust, comes in its own burner / pot stand. Burns in most conditions which are not outright windy, and using solid fuel means that you can easily see how much burn capacity you have left. Will not flare (although it burns with a big flame)or otherwise misbehave if you put it in a tackle bag and treat it roughly. But - not for use in enclosed spaces! This means not in a tent, or some small draughtless passage that you're digging - use common sense.Big passages, underground camps (intended or emergency)or brewing up while someone rigs that 250m pitch - useful for all these things. For obvious reasons, this is not for posting!
Petzl Fixe pulley
£14.50

Petzl Fixe pulley

Petzl Fixe pulley. Simple, sturdy, fix cheeked pulley for hauling, simple tyroleans, and self rescue. Carry one of these and two oval krabs with your basic SRT rig, and it is possible to create an effective pulley jammer system; as long as you know how to make it in the first place. Simple bearing, so not as low friction as bigger models. However, it is small enough to carry unnoticed, until it is needed. Also works in conjunction with a Mini - or Pro traxion to make a very effective 2:1 hauling system. Requires an oval krab for greatest effectiveness.
Petzl Mini traxion
£52.00

Petzl Mini traxion

Petzl Mini traxion pulley jammer. Simple integrated pulley jammer system which can be used for lifelining and hauling (gear or people). Also functions as a spare jammer (although not as effectively as an actual spare jammer!) Swing cheek sides and simple bearing, simpler and quicker to put in use than the traditional 'pulley plus jammer and two oval krabs' arrangement; no bad thing when the pressure is on. A useful tool for many professional cavers, and those doing SRT in more remote locations where initial self rescue at least is a possibility. This item needs an oval krab to work properly. NOTE: if you buy one of these - learn how to use it before taking it underground. Really. Especially how to release it under load.
Petzl Pro traxion
£83.00

Petzl Pro traxion

Petzl Pro traxion pulley jammer. A larger, heavier, but more easily operated integrated pulley jammer than the Mini traxion. More effective low friction bearings, and the sides swing apart more easily when required. Designed for more serious rescue hauling, it is frequently used by rescue teams and professional cavers. Not generally an item of personal kit, but taking a pair away on a trip abroad, putting them in a bag with spare ropes and a couple of bolt kits - and having a plan!- is a step towards being able to make an effective initial response to a casualty in a cave...injuries and other circumstances permitting. Use your common sense! Don't sue me if you choose to haul a spinal injury in their harness... This kit requires an oval krab, two are more useful.Add a Fixe pulley for the makings of the effective 2:1 haul system. NOTE: as with the Mini traxion, the place to learn how to use this is not underground. Especially, how to release it while your mate is stuck under a waterfall. Practice - like any tool you've got to use it correctly.
Petzl Spatha knife
£16.50

Petzl Spatha knife

Petzl Spatha folding knife, short. Solid handle, sharp serrated blade well suited for rope cutting, large hole in main body ideal for clipping in to an oval karabiner. A cheap and effective safety tool that should be carried on every SRT trip! This applies double if you plan to carry either of the pulley - jammers, the Mini traxion or Pro traxion; ropes, water, and a complex release system don't mix; good to have a simple back - up plan. Has also been used by Russians to open tin cans (not recommended) and slices baguettes with ease.
